This multi-generational family residence in Kumasi was arguably the most challenging residential brief I’ve ever worked on.

The task? To design four and a half independent living quarters for three generations of an extended family — all under one roof — without it looking like an apartment block or a grandiose mansion.

We leaned into modernist simplicity to minimize visual weight and scale, while drawing from traditional spatial principles to encourage interaction, unity, and communal gathering.

Now, with construction well underway, we’re seeing that careful balance of privacy and togetherness, function and form, come to life — one block, beam, and courtyard at a time.
